Too Old to Die Young August 30, 2011

I did a preview/interview with Timber Timbre for the Polaris Music Prize on the weekend. And yesterday Arts & Crafts premiered the band’s the new video (animated by Jesi the Elder) for “Too Old to Die Young”.

Listeners describe Timber Timbre’s LP Creep On Creepin’ On as spooky and gothic. But the timeless quality of the record sounds slower and less dramatic. There’s a lot of build-up in the songs and it’s heroic in a way how they illuminate the procession of mortality, imagining death as something blunt or even something soft that catches you – a net.

There are many songs in the LP that take hold and move you. For me, “Too Old to Die Young” punctures and opens up the vaults of the past. It’s arrival and departure as the repetition of the chorus shake you. “I’m givin’ it, givin’ it, givin’ it givin’ it all up / I’m givin’ it, givin’ it, givin’ it givin’ it all up now,” yields Taylor Kirk over endless skies of memory and flesh.
